Fall
Celebration 2014
On Saturday, September 6,
2014 79 women gathered at the beautiful Oak Grove Moravian Church in
Winston-Salem, North Carolina for the Fall Celebration and Study Book Workshop.
There were 19 churches represented at the event that is held each year for all
women of the Southern Province. Reverend Judy Knopf led us in a moving worship service.
Reverend Ginny Tobiassen led the Bible Study Workshop, presenting the book "Prayer Your Greatest Privilege" by Bishop Robert Iobst. As always Ginny spoke of many ideas to bring new life to this beloved book first published in 1986.
Reverend Patty Garner reviewed the mission book for this year: "Women in Mission, Making a Difference in our World" Volume II. She also shared with the attendees many heartwarming successes of the Unity Women's Desk.
The 2015 Budget for the Provincial Women's Board was presented and approved by the women present.
The women of the Oak Grove congregation prepared a delicious meal for the group. As the meal was being served Bishop Sam Gray and Armando Rusindo, President of the Moravian Church in Cuba arrived to bring greetings. He spoke of the decision he had to make when faced with holding a Women's Conference in Cuba or a meeting to approve the Book of Order for the newly formed group of churches. The room was soon filled with laughter, Christian fellowship and joy upon hearing of the successes of the Moravian brothers and sisters in Cuba.
GREAT THINGS ARE HAPPENING
AT THE UNITY WOMEN’S DESK
It is hard to believe that
we started the Unity Women’s Desk just three and a half years ago. We have helped over 45 women and girls with
scholarships, we’ve helped to start five new businesses, and we’ve sponsored
numerous women’s conferences and seminars on issues of health, spiritual
well-being, and vocational training for women.
Now there are two new
exciting projects in the works:
1) We
will be offering a two-year scholarship
to a Southern Province woman who is pursuing a career that will help
improve the quality of life for women in our world. The scholarship is available to Moravian
women who are at least rising juniors in college or who are pursuing an
advanced degree. An application is
available online at www.unitywomensdesk.org
or from any Provincial Women’s Board member.
We want this generation of women to be working to make life better for
the next generation of women. The recipient of the scholarship will be
announced at the 12th Moravian Women’s Conference next summer. The deadline for applications is March 15,
2015.
2)
Plans are now almost complete for the Fourth Unity Women’s Consultation,
which will be held February 18-25, 2016
in Paramaribo, Suriname. The theme
will be, “Am I My Sister’s Keeper?” Registration will begin in January 2015, but
the selection process for two delegates from the Southern Province has already
begun. Applications for consideration to be one of the two delegates are available online at www.unitywomensdesk.org
or from the Provincial Women’s Board. The deadline for applying is November 15,
2014.
The great news is that the Hotel Krasnapolsky in
Paramaribo will hold 400 people so there will be enough room for any observers who would like to attend. The purpose of the Consultation will be to
strategize ways to improve the lives of our Moravian sisters around the
world. We will be looking at how to do
this in the six areas of focus for the UWD:
Education, Violence against Women, Employment and Overcoming Poverty,
Health Issues of Women and Children, Parenting for Justice, and Supporting
Women in Ministry. Women with expertise in many areas will help us learn how to
accomplish these objectives and ill guide us through the process of
implementing the ideas that come from this Consultation.
Registration forms will be available with the monthly
Prayer List beginning in January and on our website. If you would like more information about the
Consultation, please check the website first and then write or call us if you
have more questions. Please give this your prayerful consideration about
attending. We would love to see you in
Paramaribo in 2016, where 70% of the Surinamese population claims to be
Moravian!!
Don’t forget that the Unity Women’s Desk is always
available to speak to your Women’s Fellowship for general meetings, circle
meetings, or Wednesday night programs.
We have so much good news to share.
Please give us an opportunity to do so.
We’d also love to have you visit our office at Cedarhyrst to see the
lovely items that are being sent to us from around the world.
Blessings,

Fellowship do not meet in the summer months, however we continue to meet year
round.
You will
find our ladies making chicken pies quarterly and have no trouble in selling
them. We are gratefully as our budget then allows us to be more benevolent.
July
General Meeting was our election of officers for the upcoming year. This gives our new officers a chance to
attend the Provincial workshop and learn more about the total fellowship.
Annually
we sponsor the Salemtowne birthday party in July supplying pound cakes and
Dixie cups of ice cream. As we celebrate the July birthdays we sing and visit
with them. A hug is always good for all
of us.
September
is the month designated for us to supply cakes to the prison ministry twice for
their services.
Our
snack bags project is going well and will need to replenish the supply very
soon. We are trying to reach out to
those less fortunate.
Thanks
to a very diligent lady in our church, we will have fresh vegetables from her
garden. A community lunch will be
offered at no cost to those wishing to attend.
We do hope to “Feed Our Sheep” as an outreach.

Prayer
List for the Unity Women’s Desk
(partial)
September
2014
Give thanks and praise for the Moravian
Music Foundation. Several years ago,
they produced a music CD of the Women’s Conference in Western Tanzania called
“Tumfuate” (“Let us follow Him”). After
their expenses were met for the production of the CD, they pledged future sales
to the Unity Women’s Desk. Last month
the sale proceeds enabled us to make a tuition grant for a woman to continue
her education to become a pastor in Tanzania.
May the Lord be praised for this continuing blessing.
Pray for women serving in ministry and
others called by Christ but restrained by gender prejudice from serving. May the Lord continue to call such women and
may those who would deny them to opportunity to serve have a change of heart
and accept whomever the Lord chooses to call to His service.
Pray for women who are victims of
violence against them simply because they are women. It is estimated that a woman is a victim of
violence every two minutes. May those
who perpetuate such violence have a change of heart and see women as the gift
of God that they truly are.
Pray for children as they return to
school after a time of vacation. Pray
that they may learn respect for one another and for others around the world as
they learn such subjects as reading, mathematics, history, and social studies.
Pray for those who are new to the
Christian faith. May each of us do our
part to spread the Good News and to exhibit the love and compassion that our
Lord has taught us.
