Serving and Sharing Newsletter June 2015

from the Provincial Women's Board, Moravian Church of America-Southern Province
June 1, 2015
A note from the President:
Dear Sisters of the Southern Province,
I sincerely hope you are enjoying the warm weather after our dreary winter.  Your Provincial Women’s Board has been at work making plans for upcoming events. Coming at the end of June is the 12th Moravian Women’s Conference at Sandy Cove, Maryland. I hope to see many of you there. It promises to be an outstanding event. This event takes place every four years and in 2019 it will be in the Southern Province.
On Saturday, September 19, our annual Fall Celebration will be held at Friedland Moravian Church.  There will be fellowship, worship, presentation of next year’s Bible Study: “Hanging In, Hanging Out,” by Rev Carol Foltz and lunch.  This year, we also plan to hold a Bazaar/Silent Auction and we sincerely hope for participation from as many churches as possible.  We are requesting that you donate items priced to be sold or with a suggested beginning bid for the Silent Auction items.
The proceeds will go toward the expenses of one of our Southern Province delegates to the Fourth Unity Women’s Consultation, “Am I My Sister’s Keeper,” to be held in Paramaribo, Suriname, in February, 2016.  The Provincial Women’s Board will sponsor one of the two delegates with the PEC sponsoring the other delegate. I urge you to be in prayer for this important event that will bring Moravian women from all over the world together. A separate article in this newsletter will give you the details of the Bazaar/Silent Auction.
Another event to mark on your calendar is the 2016 Spiritual Life Retreat to be held at Laurel Ridge Conference Center on April 29- May 1. The facilitator will be Bishop Blair Couch of the Northern Province and the theme will be “Joy”.  Watch for registration information in early 2016. A new source of scholarships will be available for this retreat.
It is indeed wonderful that we have so many opportunities for spiritual growth as well as fellowship with our sisters in Christ.
Blessings to all of you,
Janet Doub, President

2019 Moravian Women’s Conference
In 2019, the 13th Moravian Women’s Conference will be held in the Southern Province.  I am pleased to announce that Sister Peggy Dodson of Home Moravian Church will be chairperson for that conference. She brings a great deal of organizational experience as well as much past involvement in our Southern Province to this leadership role. Sister Janice Wilson of the Unity Moravian Church has agreed to continue to be registrar. She has a great deal of previous successful experience in this role and we are very fortunate that she has agreed to continue to serve.  One additional person will be chosen for this committee.
We look forward to hosting this important event.  Your PWB sincerely hopes that many women from our Province will be willing to accept responsibilities for the Conference. The Conference Committee cannot do this without assistance from the sisters of the Southern Province.
Janet Doub, on behalf of the PWB
BAZAAR/SILENT AUCTION
As mentioned in the President’s message, a Bazaar/Silent Auction will be held at Friedland Moravian as a feature of our annual Fall Celebration. Bazaar/Silent Auction  co-chairs Mallie Graham and Julia Horton are making plans for an exciting event. Hopefully all Fellowships will participate by donating items pre-priced for the Bazaar, or with a suggested minimum bid for the Silent Auction. Suggested  items are Moravian items, baked goods, canned or preserved food,  hand crafts, pottery, art work, antiques, and etc,
Those planning to bring items should call Cindy Lamb, administrative assistant to the Board, at 722-4911, and let her know that you are participating, so we can make sure to provide enough space. Plan to arrive early so your item or items can be displayed during the registration.
The proceeds of your donated items will be used to help fund our delegate to the Unity Women’s Consultation to be held in Paramaribo, Surinam in February 2016.
Please email any questions or concerns to Cindy Lamb at pwbmcsp@gmail.com  Thank you for your consideration.

You are Invited
Two Moravian sisters from the country of Albania, who were instrumental in starting the Lutheran-Moravian Church of Albania, will be visiting in Winston-Salem from June 29 to July 6.  There will be an official reception for them at Friedland Moravian Church on July 1, 2015 at 7:00 P.M. in the Fellowship Hall.  They will show a PowerPoint of the work in Albania, and there will be light refreshments as well. Our thanks to Friedland Moravian for hosting this special event.

Albania is the poorest and most atheistic country in all of Europe.  Come and hear the amazing story of how three women came to know Jesus Christ as Savior through the efforts of Lutheran and Moravian missionaries and how they started a church in their homes as soon as the Communist dictatorship, which had forbidden any religious worship for over 30 years, fell from power.  Today, the Lutheran-Moravian Church in Albania is a part of the European Continental Province. If you would like for them to visit your church, please contact Patty Garner at 725-6413 or at Unitywomen2011@gmail.com

News from YOU!
Friedland Moravian Church has several things coming up that we are really excited about.
June 9th is our Mother, Daughter, Friend Banquet, which is a yearly event.  Our theme this year is Friedland’s Antique Roadshow, with antiques from our congregation.  This should be a lot of fun and the pot luck meal is always delicious!
July will bring the Friedland’s Farmers Market.  Each Thursday in July from 4-7 pm will be an opportunity to sell your fruits, vegetables, baked goods, eggs, flowers and handcrafts.  A table can be reserved in the pavilion for $10.00 per Thursday or $40.00 for all 5 Thursdays.  Or, come, eat, shop and fellowship!  We will offer hot dog dinners, fried apple pies and take and bake chicken pies.  If you are interested in reserving a table contact Beth Alphin at 336-661-5550.
Save the date for our Ladies Night Out, Thursday, September 10th.  It has been two years since our last Ladies Night Out and we are looking forward to this year’s event.  We will send more information out as the date gets closer.  Tickets will go on sale in August.
Blessings to everyone from Deborah Boyan, Friedland Women’s Fellowship President.

Mizpah Moravian Church-Craft Fest at Bethania Visitor Center (Corner of Bethania Rd & Hwy 65), Saturday June 13, 2015, 9:00am to 3:00pm. Shop with local artists, crafters, home baked goods, breakfast and lunch.

The Women’s Fellowship of Friedberg Moravian Church held a very successful chicken pie sale and spring bazaar on Saturday March 28, 2015.  Over 800 chicken pies were baked and sold.  Light breakfast and lunch were served and local craftsmen and vendors bought tables to sell their creations.  As a result the Women’s Fellowship was able to give away $17,000 to missions and outreach.

On Tuesday June 2nd, the Women’s Fellowship will hold their general meeting with a potluck and dessert supper.  Martha Hartley from Old Salem Museums and Gardens will give a talk on landscape history with historic practices and tips from the Old Salem gardens.  On Friday September 11 and Saturday September 12 the Women’s Fellowship will hold their 3rd annual yard/tag sale from 8:00 to 2:00 in the Family Life Center each day.

Blessings,
Vicki Stanfield
