The Serving and Sharing Newsletter, October 2021

From Our President:

Dear Sisters,

As I look around my neighborhood this morning, I see leaves changing color and early morning walkers and runners dressed for the cool weather.  Fall is my favorite time of year.  It may be because of the colors, but I think it also reminds me of God and His plans for us.  The leaves will fall and the landscape will look bare, but it is preparation for the new life coming in the Spring.  So we begin to think of the things we have to look forward to before Spring arrives.  Our celebrations of the birth and the resurrection of Christ and gatherings with our families and friends that this year we hope will be more like what we have experienced in the past.  Even with the strife going on in the world, life is returning to something we recognize. So Fall makes me feel refreshed and happy to be looking to the future and the opportunities I will have to serve God.

Things are returning to a new normal with the Provincial Women’s Board.  We are meeting in person once again, and it is a blessing to spend time with these wonderful women in person.  We are also planning events with hope that they will be in person.  Day of Prayer is already being planned.  The Spiritual Life Retreat is scheduled for Laurel Ridge on April 22-24, 2022.

Rev. Victoria Lasley will be our leader for the Spiritual Life Retreat.  It promises to be an exciting time.  Please put this on your calendar and share the information with other women in your church.  More information will be coming as plans come together for this wonderful time to worship God and spend time with other Moravian women on the mountain top.

Blessings,

Pam Prevatte

Home Moravian-Candle Tea is a 92-year old tradition at Home Moravian Church in Old Salem. Started with a small group of women of the church, the first teas were organized to show to visitors and neighbors a Putz display and enjoy each other’s’ company with a true tea.

This event has evolved over the years to a beloved tradition for the Advent season in Winston-Salem. Now presented in the Single Brothers’ House in Old Salem, the traditional tea begins the season of waiting for the Christ Child and all that He will bring to the world. The past two years have been a change for the tea as the COVID virus has caused the production of the tea to be rethought. The year 2020 saw the Candle Tea recreated in a drive-by event so that visitors could enjoy the elements of the traditional tea from their cars as they drove around Salem Square to see and hear the story of the Candle Teas of past years.

The year 2021 started off on a positive note as all seemed well with the pandemic as numbers declined during the summer. The traditional tea was in the planning stages once again. However, when late summer arrived and COVID numbers started rising and Delta variant had arrived, organizers realized that it would not be safe to hold the tea in the Single Brothers’ House.

For 2021, the Candle Tea returns to Salem Square as Candle Tea ON Salem Square. Sights, sounds and smells of Candle Tea will fill the square as stations for strolling visitors will highlight the traditions of Advent in the Moravian Church. Visitors can view how candles are made for the Lovefeast, view a reproduction of an early Moravian living room with symbols of Advent including Moravian stars and Advent Pyramids, or learn more about the Salem Putz. Some simple items such as Christingles and stars will be available for purchase, either made or in kit form.

The Women’s Fellowship is working hard to present a new version of Candle Tea with the traditional sights, sounds and smells as they work around the COVID issues. Come join them on Dec. 4th from noon until 4pm for this event, their gift to the community this Advent season. Submitted by Kae Roberts

We continue our support of Easton Elementary School by collecting clothing and school supplies for them.  In December we will have an Angel Tree with suggested gifts for students.
